| September 2, 2007 - "Graceful Practices" - Luke 14:1, 7-14 - 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time - Rev. Jonathan E. Carroll, Th.M. - First Presbyterian Church, Owensboro, Kentucky. "Benjamin Franklin describes in his autobiography a program he designed
for self-improvement. He created a table of the various values he
thought he should cultivate, and tells the story of how he worked on
each one in turn. But he tells us that he made one fatal mistake in his
plan to become perfect in every virtue. He left humility for last, and
by the time he got to it, he was already so near perfection in every
other area that humility was impossible. For Franklin, values were of
great importance." |
September 9, 2007 - "Welcome Them As You Welcome Me" - Philemon 1-21 -
Rev. Wesley Kendall - "Top ten things we think of when we hear the words 'evangelism conference': ..."

| September 16, 2007 - "Jesus Needs a Spin Doctor" - Luke 14.25-33" - Rev. Jonathan E. Carroll, Th.M. - "I love how our text begins: Now large crowds were traveling with him,
and he turned to them and said…”. What does it take to draw a large
crowd these days…to church." |
| September 23, 2007 - 25th Ordinary - "Upside Down/Inside Out" - Luke 16.1.13 - Rev. Jonathan E. Carroll, Th.M. - "Somebody said once that parables are like Trojan horses—quite
impressive on the outside, but you let them in, and while contemplating
their beauty then, bam, they get you. But this one? You let it in, open
its doors, poke around inside the thing a while, and then, if you’re
like me, you run to the Old Testament or some other reading to see if
one of them will preach better than this one?" |
| September 30, 2007 - 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time (Evangelism Sunday) - "In God We Trust" - Luke 16:19-31 - Rev. Jonathan E. Carroll, Th.M. - "The elders of a well-to-do congregation of my past announced that they
would give grocery vouchers to strangers who dropped by the church
office. The vouchers could be used for food, but were "not valid for
alcohol, lottery tickets or tobacco." The congregation was thrilled.
Cash handouts were making them uncomfortable. No one wanted to see his
donated greenbacks plunked down at a liquor store; no one wanted to be
an 'enabler.'" |
